Impact of atmospheric turbulence on free space optical (FSO) communication
In free-space optical communication links, atmospheric turbulence causes fluctuations in both the intensity and the phase of the received light signal, impairing link performance. Free Space Optical (FSO) communications is the only viable solution for creating a three-dimensional global communications grid of interconnected ground and airborne nodes. The huge amount of data exchange between sat...
متن کاملFiber coupling with adaptive optics for free-space optical communication
We describe an adaptive optical fiber coupling system for free-space optical communication comprising a microelectromechanical deformable mirror and a VLSI gradient descent controller for model-free performance optimization. A comparison of Strehl ratio maximization with direct model-free coupling efficiency optimization revealed an advantage of the latter method.
متن کاملAll-fiber few-mode multicore photonic lantern mode multiplexer.
The emergence of space division multiplexing (SDM) for ultrahigh capacity networks has heralded pioneering Petabit-class optical transmission systems. In parallel to novel SDM fibers, a new class of components to enable scalable, low-loss schemes for unlocking fiber capacity is being developed. In this work, an all-fiber mode selective photonic lantern mode multiplexer designed for launching in...
متن کاملMode-division multiplexed transmission with inline few-mode fiber amplifier.
We demonstrate mode-division multiplexed WDM transmission over 50-km of few-mode fiber using the fiber's LP01 and two degenerate LP11 modes. A few-mode EDFA is used to boost the power of the output signal before a few-mode coherent receiver. A 6×6 time-domain MIMO equalizer is used to recover the transmitted data. We also experimentally characterize the 50-km few-mode fiber and the few-mode EDFA.
